The New Jersey Devils have traded star winger Taylor Hall to the Arizona Coyotes. In exchange, New Jersey has received a first-round and third-round draft pick, Kevin Bahl, Nick Merkley, and Nate Schnarr. The Coyotes also received prospect Blake Speers.

In Hall, the Coyotes gets a top-six dynamic scorer who will prove to be a pivotal piece on the top line. He’s a guy that will easily net 25-30 in a season if he’s healthy. Hall spent his first six seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before being traded to Jersey in 2016. He has put up 208 goals and 328 assists for 536 career points in 592 career games. He was the first overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
In the 2017-18 season, Hall won the league’s Hart Trophy as the player, “most valuable to his team”. He accomplished this accolade after tallying an impressive 39 goals and 54 assists. This gave him a sixth-best 93 points on the season despite playing in only 76 games. He also ranked 161st in the league in average-time-on-ice that season, adding further prowess to the accomplishment.
This year, Hall is coming off an injury-shortened 2018-19 season where he scored 11 goals and 26 assists for 37 points after missing the final 47 games last year with a knee injury. He also added 16 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 53.8 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of +6.5. This season, he has six goals and 19 assists for 25 points in 30 games.
What This Means for the Future
Hall has been rumoured to be wanting out of Jersey for the past few years and has finally gotten his wish. He will be a UFA at the end of the season and will likely just be a rental for the rest of the season and then a bidding war will commence for his services in the off-season. Expect Hall’s new team to possibly look to lock him up long term if they can afford his services moving forward.
