Andrew Copp Awarded Contract in Arbitration with Winnipeg Jets
Copp has been a serviceable forward for Winnipeg in his five year career. The Michigan native scored 25 points in 69 games for the Jets last season. That brings his career totals up to 84 points in 294 career games. Copp sports a respectable 50.4 Corsi at even strength over that time and has improved his overall puck possession numbers as he has aged. Last season he had a 51.1 percent corsi and a relative corsi of 3.0.
The 4th round, 104th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft pick will likely slot into the Jets’ bottom-six for 2019-20.
Andrew Copp was allegedly asking for a 1-year, 2.9 AAV deal from the arbitrator while the Jets countered with a 2-year, $3 million contract at a $1.5 million AAV.
What This Means for the Future
The Jets have yet to announce if they will accept the contract or let him walk as a UFA, however, for just 2 years under 2.5 it’s a low risk contract, even if something goes sideways with Copp.
At 25 years old, Copp is an effective depth forward for the Jets who are coming up on a potential cap crunch. This 2-year deal will take Copp to unrestricted free agency in 2021. This past season, Copp set a career high in goals despite only playing 69 games. Copp posted 5 points, all assists, in their 6 playoff games this past year before their first round elimination to the St. Louis Blues.
