Brayden Point Re-Signs With The Tampa Bay Lightning

Brayden Point NHL Rumours

The Tampa Bay Lightning signed restricted free agent forward Brayden Point to a 3-year contract worth $20.25 million, or $6.75 million per season. This contract carries him through the 2021-22 season.

Brayden Point Signs With the Lightning

Over his short 3-year NHL career Point has played exclusively for the Lightning. He has put up 91 goals and 107 assists for 198 career points in 229 career games. He was originally drafted in the 3rd round, 79th overall of the 2014 NHL draft by the Lightning.

Last season he scored 41 goals and 51 assists for 92 points. He also added 28 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 51.9 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 0.7. In just four playoff games in the first round, Point posted just 1 goal and no assists.

Brayden Point was in a bit of a standoff until this weekend, however, it appears both sides wanted to get a job done. This is huge for Tampa who looks to avenge their first-round sweep last season.

What This Means for the Future

Point is a young star that really came into his own in the 2018-19 season. Being one of three players on the Lightning to score over 40 goals this season, he was a large part of the team’s offensive dominance. At only 22, Point is just beginning his career and still has room to grow as a player. Reaching this level of success at his age is impressive, and he will be an integral part of the roster moving forward.

Proving to be a 3rd round steal, Point was a part of one of the best lines in hockey last season. His signing is a major one for the team, and his presence will only benefit the roster. He was able to prove his value by also centring the Lightning’s top powerplay unit last season and scoring 20 goals and 35 points on the man advantage.
