Simon left Tuesday’s game in the last five minutes of the first period after a collision with Colorado’s Gabriel Landeskog. Simon fell awkwardly to the ice as his left leg came out from under him. He skated gingerly to the bench and did not return to the game.

The Penguins won the contest, 6-3. Pittsburgh’s head coach Mike Sullivan had no immediate update on Simon’s status after the game. He confirmed Wednesday that the forward will be day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
Simon currently has four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 26 games this season. The Penguins drafted Simon 137th overall in the fifth round of the 2015 NHL Draft. Over his four year NHL career, he has tallied eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points over 64 games.
What This Means For The Future
Simon is a fundamental piece to the team’s offense. The Penguins depend heavily on their top line for production and he has been thriving on the wing of Sidney Crosby. The young forward regularly logs vital minutes on Pittsburgh’s power-play unit.
If Simon is ultimately ruled out for Thursday’s game against the New York Islanders, Riley Sheahan or Bryan Rust are likely candidates to fill his place. Rust is the more likely candidate, however, as he was practicing on the top line Wednesday in Simon’s absence. This could help Rust break out of a 18-game goal-scoring drought. Garrett Wilson, who was a healthy scratch for the game, could also figure into play.
