Ottawa Senators Goalie Craig Anderson Granted Leave; Thomas Chabot Re-Assigned

Several news updates out of Ottawa on Thursday morning- including the leave of goaltender Craig Anderson, the demotion of Thomas Chabot, and the calling up of Max McCormick and Fred Claesson.

Ottawa Senators Goalie Craig Anderson Granted Leave

Craig Anderson, who received word last week that his wife, Nicholle, had been diagnosed with cancer, will not suit up against the Vancouver Canucks Thursday night.  When Anderson originally learned of the terrible news, he took an initial leave. Anderson returned on Sunday to face the Edmonton Oilers, where he posted a shutout. He played again on Tuesday, when the Senators squared off against the Carolina Hurricanes. Anderson lead the team to a 2-1 shootout win. The past few days have obviously been tough for Anderson, and leave was granted by Senators staff.  A timetable for his return is unknown.

It has been confirmed that Mike Condon, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins in return for a draft pick on Wednesday, will start in net against the Canucks.

Thomas Chabot Re-Assigned

Thomas Chabot played in only one of the first nine games for the Ottawa Senators.  In that game, a 7-4 Sens victory over the Arizona Coyotes, Chabot only saw 7:09 of ice time and posted no points.  The Senators sent Chabot to the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Chabot had this to say regarding his demotion, “For sure I wanted to be here for the season, but at the same time I look forward going back to junior,” he said. “And in Saint John we have a real good team and I’ll also have the chance to represent Canada at the World Juniors again this year so that’s something I’m looking forward to.” (Via Sportsnet.ca).

Recalls

On the other end of things, the Senators called up both Max McCormick and Fred Claesson from their American Hockey League affiliate team- the Binghamton Senators. McCormick, a 5’11”, 185 pound forward has spent the start of the AHL season with Binghamton. He has scored a single goal in six games played.  Last season, McCormick split time with both Ottawa and Binghamtom. He scored 15 goals and 15 assists in 57 games played for Binghamton. McCormick also had two goals and two assists in 20 games played for Ottawa.  He was the Senators 171st overall pick in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Fred Claesson was selected by the Senators 126th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He has  spent both time in the NHL and the AHL.  The 6’0″, 205 pound defenceman is entering his fifth season with the club. However he has played in only 16 NHL games. He has been limited to two points as well as two penalty minutes.  In Binghamton this season, he has played in their first six games, but has not scored any points. He has been assessed two penalty minutes.
