Former National Hockey League coach Jacques Demers suffered a stroke Saturday and has been admitted to the hospital for care. The 72-year-old suffered his second stroke in the past six months, his last one being in April of this year.

Former NHL Coach Jacques Demers Hospitalized After Suffering a Stroke
The former Quebec Nordiques, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Montreal Canadiens coach has been hospitalized in Montreal but his office says no other details are available and the extent of the stroke is not currently known. This summer, Demers underwent care and rehabilitation, which allowed him to make a pubic appearance on September 28th, when he was inducted into the Quebec Sports Hall of Fame. More recently, Demers appeared at the Canadiens home opener this past Tuesday, the 18th, where he handed off the infamous torch to Habs captain Max Pacioretty.
“I got a bit emotional,” Pacioretty said after Tuesday’s game. “Jacques has always been around and always been so positive and always said the right thing, so it was really hard to hear the news (in April). To see him in the tunnel and to see that he was moved and the reception that he got really meant a lot to me.” (Sportsnet.ca)

His coaching career was a spectacular one, having won the Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1993, which currently stands as their most recent one. He also won and is the only person to win back-to-back Jack Adams awards as the NHL’s coach to have “adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success”, with the Detroit Red Wings in 1986-87 and 1987-88. In 2009, Demers was appointed to the Canadian Senate in Ottawa by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
