Toronto Maple Leafs sign Josh Leivo to Extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Friday that they have signed 24-year-old forward Josh Leivo to a one-year contract extension.  The deal, which is for the 2018-19 season carries a salary, and cap hit, for $950,000. The team announced the move in a press release, as well as through the official team Twitter account.

Leivo has scored one assist this season but has only appeared in five games for the Maple Leafs. A press box regular, he has collected nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points in 46 career NHL games with the Maple Leafs. He spent his entire career with the Leafs. The team selected him with a third-round draft pick, 86th overall, in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

In the minors, Leivo has 51 goals and 73 assists for 124 points in 171 regular season games with the American Hockey League’s Toronto Marlies. In 2015-16 he was named an AHL All-Star. Leivo has played in 35 career Calder Cup playoff games in the AHL, registering eight goals and 19 assists for 27 points.

Leivo could have been a group six unrestricted free agent this summer if he did not appear in at least 34 more games for the Leafs this season. This contract prevents that from happening. It keeps him under Leafs control through the end of next season when he will be a restricted free agent.

The Leafs are on the road tonight and will face the Montreal Canadiens on a nationally televised broadcast on Hockey Night in Canada. They will attempt to keep their current five-game winning streak alive.
