Restricted free agent defenseman Calvin de Haan has re-signed with the New York Islanders. His new contract is for one year and is worth $3.3 million. Mike Kelly of the NHL Network was first with the news. The 26-year-old defenseman has spent his entire four-year NHL career with the Islanders. With the deal, the two sides avoid arbitration.

Calvin de Haan Re-Signs with the New York Islanders
Calvin de Haan was drafted twelfth overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Islanders. He would go on to spend the next two years back with his Ontario Hockey League (OHL) team- the Oshawa Generals. In 2011, he was placed on the Islanders American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate team- the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. In Bridgeport, he played 56 games, scoring twice and adding 14 assists. Also in 2011, de Haan finally got his chance in the Islanders lineup. He played only one game that season. He spent the entire 2012-13 NHL season back in the minors with Bridgeport but only played three games due to an injury. In 2013-14, de Haan got his big break and cracked the Isles lineup full-time, where he has remained ever since.
In 271 career NHL games, de Haan has scored 11 goals and has notched 58 assists for 69 career points. He is a solid blueliner who plays a physical game and is decent at moving the puck. Expect de Haan to fill a second pair defensive role with again next season. At 26, he is still somewhat young and has time to better himself and mature.
De Haan is coming off a three-year, $5.9 million dollar contract ($1.967 million AAV). It was backloaded and he earned $2.9 million in salary last year.
