The Ottawa Senators announced that forward Derick Brassard suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He will be undergoing surgery to repair the injury. Ottawa general manager Pierre Dorion said that the injury was found while Brassard underwent tests by the Senators medical staff after the OTT-PIT series. He could be out 4-5 months, which puts the start of next season up in the air.

Derick Brassard to Undergo Surgery, Could Miss Start of Next Season
Brassard just wrapped up his first full season with the Ottawa Senators after being traded last season by the New York Rangers, a trade that involved Ottawa’s Mika Zibanejad. Brassard would score 14 goals and 25 assists in 81 games played this regular season. During the Senators postseason run, one that would take them all the way to a Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Brassard scored four goals and added seven helpers for a total of eleven points.
“After undergoing tests following the team’s playoff series against Pittsburgh it was determined that Derick suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder that will require surgery to repair. The procedure will take place in the near future, with the expected recovery time for this type of injury being four to five months. Career
The 29-year-old Brassard had been struggling with this pesky shoulder injury during the playoffs. He did not miss any significant time though.The date of his surgery has yet to be announced but it can be assumed that it will be sometime this week. With his recovery time being 4-5 months, this endangers Brassard of possibly missing the pre-season and beginning of the regular season. The faster Brassard gets the operation, the faster he can begin his recovery process.
Brassard was drafted 6th overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He would spend six seasons with Columbus before being traded to the Rangers during the 2012-13 season. From there he would spend four season on Broadway, before being traded in the summer of 2016 to Ottawa. In his career, Brassard has scored a total of 141 goals and has tallied 241 assists in 644 regular season games played. As for his career postseason numbers, he has netted 22 goals and 33 assists in 78 playoff games.
Brassard has been quite healthy in his career, having missed only seven regular season games since the beginning of the 2013 season. If all goes well, expect Brassard to be in the lineup for opening night.
