Ottawa Senators Acquire Forward from the San Jose Sharks

The Ottawa Senators have acquired forward Fabian Zetterlund in a trade with the San Jose Sharks centred around prospect Zach Ostapchuk. Ottawa also receives former-second round pick Tristen Robins, and a fourth round-pick from San Jose. Meanwhile, the Sharks receive forward Noah Gregor and a 2025 second-round pick in addition to Ostapchuk in the deal.

Ottawa Senators Acquire Forwards Zetterlund, Robins, and Draft Pick

The Senators continue to tinker with their roster by acquiring Fabian Zetterlund. Ottawa had already acquired centre Dylan Cozens earlier in the day from the Buffalo Sabres, and have now improved their forward depth by adding Zetterlund. The forward has scored 17 goals and 36 points across 64 games with the league’s bottom-ranked team. Zetterlund is an RFA heading into this summer and will need to be extended by Ottawa, as no extension is currently being reported. While Robins and the fourth-round pick are sweeteners in this deal, Zetterlund will inject some much-needed offence into the Senators roster as they look to compete for a playoff spot.

San Jose Sharks Continue Rebuild and Receive Ostapchuk, Gregor, and a Second-Round Pick

The leagues worst-ranked team continues to sell off pieces for future assets. Ostapchuk is a former second-round pick of the Senators, and scored a goal and three assists across 43 NHL games this season. At 21 years of age, Ostapchuk has more developing to do before being an impact player for San Jose. Fortunately for the team, Ostapchuk’s prime will line up well with young stars Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith and Victor Eklund.

In addition to Ostapchuk, GM Mike Grier has added another second-round pick to an organization that already possesses an embarrassment of riches in regards to futures. Veteran forward Noah Gregor will be a valuable player to have in the bottom six, where his veteran experience could rub off well on the young forwards of the Sharks. With this move, Grier has continued to set up the Sharks as a future powerhouse through the draft.
