The Calgary Flames Add a Pair of Depth Defencemen

NHL rumours

The Calgary Flames are in the news today, after signing depth defenceman Jarred Tinordi to a two-way deal. Furthermore, they also added veteran D-man Tyson Barrie on a professional tryout (PTO). With all the movement out of Calgary by general manager Craig Conroy recently, this helps add roster depth ahead of the 2024 NHL training camp.

The Duo of Jarred Tinordi and Tyson Barrie Signs Today as Calgary Flame Depth Defencemen

Jarred Tinordi’s NHL component of his contract is worth $800,000. That is a nice deal for Calgary if he does spend some time with the big club. Jarred, son of former long-time NHLer, Mark Tinordi, is a bit of a physical specimen. He checks in at 6-foot-6, however, he has never really found a home in the NHL. In the nine seasons that he has appeared in the NHL, last year’s 52 games was his career-high. If you go with the logic that defencemen take longer to develop, Tinordi could have a few good years left in him, considering he is only now hitting his career-high in NHL games played. Furthermore, he could be the type of player, that if he has a strong season with Calgary, that they are able to parlay into an useful draft pick at the trade deadline. As we have seen recently, with players like Vincent Desharnais or Nikita Zadorov, even if they don’t perform in the regular season, the playoffs are a different beast. Tinordi could be a great third-pair guy for a playoff team looking for that little extra something.

Hey Tyson Barrie, ‘Don’t Mind if We Do’

Speaking of potential trade deadline trade bait, enter Tyson Barrie. Along with Tinordi, Barrie also signs a contract with Calgary today. The latter is a smooth skating, right-shot defenceman, who specializes in power play production. At 33-years-old, and 809 career NHL games under his belt, he could be exactly what a playoff team needs to add for depth and experience. There’s no reason to suggest that he cannot still be productive. Even last year with the Nashville Predators, he was over 18 minutes a game. From 2013-14 to 2022-23, every year he was between 38 and 59 points. It makes perfect sense to try him on a PTO, and if he makes the team, great. Not only would his presence be great for the locker room, but he would also provide potential trade bait at the deadline. Stockpiling draft picks is something GM Conroy is all about these days.

What Does This Mean Big Picture in Cow Town?

The Calgary Flames went through many changes going back to last year. Their blueline especially went through the ringer. Looking at the names they moved on from, it’s no wonder playoffs were the expectation at one time. We already mentioned Zadorov, but also Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin were all traded since last season. Therefore, Conroy needs to do some restocking of the inventory. It was a clear sign of needing to begin a rebuild, but these moves also point to that decision. It will be a long season in Calgary, but could be an opportunity for both Tinordi and Barrie.
