Season Already Over For Member of the Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that forward Jesper Fast has undergone neck surgery and will miss the 2024-25 season. This is unfortunate news for the Swedish national and will be hopeful to come as soon as he’s able.

Jesper Fast Out for Season for the Carolina Hurricanes

The 32-year old scored six goals and added 13 assists in 73 games last season. The Nassjo, Sweden, native ranked sixth on the team in hits with 79. Furthermore, he played in his 700th NHL game in April. However, Fast was injured in the final game of the regular season and missed the entire 2024 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Impact on the Hurricanes

Fast joined the Hurricanes prior to the 2020-21 season. In four seasons, Fast has been a reliable forward in the lineup. In addition, he has only missed 17 regular-season games since joining the Hurricanes. The Canes clearly appreciate what Fast has brought to the team. The team retained his services in 2023.

Fast’s role with the Hurricanes will be missed. It will be interesting to see if the team will look to fill the void from within or look outside the organization. There are many available free agents currently. Tyler Johnson is a name who stands out. A former Stanley Cup Champion, Johnson would bring experience to a team looking to get over the hump in the playoffs.

Fast’s Future

Fast is a free agent after this season. If he recovers well from surgery, the Hurricanes may consider re-signing him. However, it is also possible the Hurricanes will move on from the veteran. If that is the case, Fast will enter free agency and look to join his third team.

It would be an unfortunate way for Fast’s time in Carolina to end. If the Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup this year, it can be nearly guaranteed Fast’s name will be engraved onto the sacred chalice.
