Bruins Defenceman Expected to Take The Next Step
Mason Lohrei, a defenceman for the Boston Bruins, had an impressive debut season in professional hockey during 2023-24. Hailing from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he showcased his skills with the Providence Bruins, tallying one goal and 16 points in just 21 games. His stellar performance in the AHL earned him the opportunity to play a significant portion of the season in the NHL too. Lohrei demonstrated potential during his time with Boston last season, scoring four goals and tallying 13 points in 41 games. Despite a few rookie errors, he showcased his ability to generate offence from the blue line and solidified his spot in the NHL.
However, Lohrei solidified his position in the Bruins’ playoff journey. Participating in 11 postseason matches for Boston, he scored a goal, accumulated four points, and maintained an even rating. He was stellar alongside shutdown defenceman Brandon Carlo. Together, the duo made for one of the better pairings for the Bruins in the playoffs. His impressive composure during the toughest period of the hockey season leaves us feeling hopeful about his potential in the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Mason Lohrei Shows Progress
The Bruins have made some changes by parting ways with Matt Grzelcyk, Derek Forbort, and Kevin Shattenkirk, which opens up a definite spot for Lohrei in the team’s lineup for the upcoming season. With Lohrei demonstrating noticeable progress as the last season unfolded, there is a strong possibility that he could be a breakout star. Lohrei possesses the skills to become a game-changing defenceman in the NHL, and it will be exciting to witness his performance in the upcoming season. Anticipate a larger role for him and increased opportunities on special teams. With his adjustment to the NHL, the 2020 second-round pick is poised for a standout year ahead. He is a clear path to do so and it’s up to him to seize it.
The Bruins defenceman has been generating a lot of buzz lately. Lohrei, the former Ohio State defenseman, has been impressing in all areas of the ice. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 211 pounds, this left-shot player averaged 16:57 minutes per game in 41 matches, scoring four goals and tallying 13 points. During the playoffs, he netted his first-ever postseason goal against the Florida Panthers while maintaining an average of over 17 minutes per game.
Mason Lohrei Wants to be Great
Lohrei’s determination to excel is undeniable! By the season’s end, Lohrei made it clear just how eager he was to enhance his skills.
“I want to be great. I want to win the Stanley Cup. I want to be a top defenseman in the league,” Lohrei said back in May at the Bruins’ end-of-season media call. “The experience and being able to have that under my belt now – just going into the summer that much more motivated to not feel like this again.”
