Blackwell Started His Career In Nashville and New York
The San Jose Sharks drafted Blackwell in 2011, but Blackwell would never play for them. Blackwell made his NHL debut in January 2019 with the Nashville Predators. He would score his first NHL goal the following season, which was his final with the Predators.
Blackwell signed a two-year contract with the New York Rangers for the 2020-21 season. Blackwell played in 47 games and set a career high in goals with 12. After the season, there was speculation that the Rangers would protect Blackwell from being selected in the 2021 Expansion Draft. The Rangers ended up not protecting Blackwell. The Seattle Kraken would select Blackwell.
Blackwell Signs New Contract
In the Kraken’s first season in the NHL, Blackwell played in 39 games and recorded 17 points. Blackwell, along with veteran defencemen Mark Giordano, was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 2022 trade deadline.
With the Maple Leads, Blackwell got his first taste of playoff action. In the team’s seven-game loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, Blackwell played in all seven games and scored a goal.
To The Windy City
Blackwell joined the Chicago Blackhawks on a two-year contract heading into the 2022-23 season. A sports hernia limited Blackwell to 53 games in 2022-23. He would not return until December 2023.
Blackwell’s Future With the Dallas Stars
This Blackwell contract signals the future for himself. Blackwell’s career has not been overly impressive so far. However, he does have experience in the league and has had a taste of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. It will be interesting to see if Blackwell can emerge as something more than just a bottom-six forward. If he can, it will be great for him and his new team. If he cannot, he can perform well as a bottom-six forward, which can be an asset.
