Offensive Defenceman Lands With Dallas Stars

Matt Dumba

Matt Dumba has signed a new contract with the Dallas Stars. The Stars have signed him to a two-year contract. Moreover, the one-way contract carries an average annual value of $3.75 million. Dumba joined the Lightning at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. Last off-season, Dumba signed a one-year deal with the Coyotes to bank on himself with the salary cap rising. With that said, the veteran defender will take his services to Dallas for the 2024-25 season.

Matt Dumba Signs Contract With Dallas Stars

While hopes were high for Dumba in Tampa last season, his play with his new club was disappointing. Dumba is an aggressive defenceman who prefers to pinch at the blue line. In 18 games with the Lightning during the regular season, he notched no goals and two assists for two points. Before joining the Thunder, Dumba added four goals and six assists for 10 points in 58 games with Arizona. With three teams across his National Hockey League career, Dumba has 83 goals and 165 assists for 248 points in 674 games. His career year came with Minnesota during the 2017-18 season, where Dumba scored 14 goals and 36 assists for 50 points in 82 games. While Dumba won’t return to his 50-point pace, what does he bring to his new team for next season?

What Dumba Brings to the Dallas Stars Backend

Matt Dumba makes plenty of sense for the Stars. He brings a physical edge with toughness and the ability to drop the mitts if needed. After an experiment in Arizona and a failed tenure in Tampa, Dumba plans to rejuvenate his career with his new deal. Dumba can play second-pairing minutes but is more suited for a bottom-pairing role at this stage in his career. Despite his aggressive play, Dumba does a solid job of retreating and defending the rush. The deal adds a solid depth defender at an affordable price tag to bolster the back end for the Stars.
