Nashville Predators Sign Free Agent Scott Wedgewood Contract
Dancing With The Devil In The Pale Moonlight
The New Jersey Devils drafted Wedgewood in the third round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Wedgewood spent the majority of his time with the Devils in the American Hockey League. Furthermore, Wedgewood only played in four games with the Devils. Wedgewood registered his first two NHL wins in those four games.
Trades Sent Wedgewood Around, But Spent The Majority Of His Time In The AHL
The Devils traded Wedgewood to the Arizona Coyotes in 2017. Wedgewood only played in 20 games with the Coyotes before he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. Wedgewood did not play in any NHL games with the Kings. The following off-season, Wedgewood signed with the Buffalo Sabres, but he again did not play in any NHL games.
Stanley Cup And Dancing With The Devil Again
In July 2019, the Tampa Bay Lightning signed Wedgewood. Once again, Wedgewood would not play in any NHL games with the team. However, Wedgewood was one of the eight players the Lightning called up to be reserves for the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Wedgewood did not play in any games. On the other hand, he got to be part of the Lightning’s run to the 2020 Stanley Cup Championship.
Wedgewood returned to the Devils. The Devils were dealing with injuries at the goaltending position and needed depth. For the first time since the 2017-18 season, Wedgewood appeared in a NHL game.
Later in the season, Wedgewood was placed on waivers and claimed by the Coyotes.
Time In The Lone Star State
The Dallas Stars traded for Wedgewood and signed him to a 2-year extension in June 2022.
In two seasons with the Stars, Wedgewood played in 29 games and registered 12 wins.
Role With New Team
Wedgewood’s role with the Predators is likely to be the backup to recently signed Jusse Saros. At the very least, he will provide depth at the goaltending position. Wedgewood currently has a .908 save percentage, suggesting he would be able to handle a larger workload than what he has had in the past, should Saros get hurt.
