Top-Six Forward Inks Contract Extension With Maple Leafs

After many weeks of speculation, forward Max Domi has landed a new contract. His home will be with the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Domi’s new contract, he will earn $3.75 million over the next three years.

Domi Signs Contract With Maple Leafs

Last summer, Domi signed a one-year deal with his hometown team, the Maple Leafs. It was a slow start for Domi with the Leafs as it took him 22 games to light the lamp. In that first half of the season, former Head Coach Sheldon Keefe tried Domi in many different scenarios. In the first half of the season, Domi saw a lot of the third line, being the third centre behind Auston Matthews and John Tavares. He was not put in a situation to succeed as he only saw just over 11 minutes of ice time per game around the late fall. Throughout the season, Domi earned the trust of Keefe and he earned a top-six role. Also, another reason for promoting Domi up the lineup was to get him going offensively, and he did just that.

Domi showed Toronto what he’s made of in the second half of the season, especially in the playoffs. Superstars Matthews and William Nylander missed a few games in the first round of the playoffs due to illness and injury. This paved out a big opportunity for Domi, and fellow free agent signing, Tyler Bertuzzi. That duo, along with Mitch Marner made up the first line for a few games. Ultimately, the Leafs lost to the Boston Bruins in seven games courtesy of David Pastrnak‘s overtime winner. However, Domi (as well as Matthews and Bertuzzi) led the team in playoff points with four.

Domi’s Elite Playmaking

Max Domi can be considered as an underrated playmaker. People forget that he once scored 72 points in one season. He achieved that feat in his first season with the Montreal Canadiens. Since then, he hasn’t reached that milestone but he’s turning out to be a 50-point player. On top of that, he put up 38 assists this past season, just six less than his career-high. The Maple Leafs will be looking for Domi to build off that season.
