The Ottawa Senators have signed young centreman Shane Pinto to his Group 10.2 (c) contract. Pinto will remain in Ottawa for one year and will have a AAV of $775k. General Manager Steve Staios made the long anticipated announcement which brings some security to the team. The 22-year-old is still relatively inexperienced having only one full professional season under his belt. However, playing the entire 2022-23 season has given him the confidence to be a capable NHL third-line centre. Also, this allows him to put his 41-game suspension for activities related to sports wagering behind him. He knows the club has his back and everyone is ready to move on.
Shane Pinto Signs Extension With the Ottawa Senators
As Shane Pinto signs, it shows an individual and organizational commitment to the team’s development process. He has played parts of three seasons for the Ottawa Senators since making his NHL debut in 2020-21. Pinto was formerly a second-round, 32nd overall, pick by the Sens in 2019. Prior to last season, Pinto had only played 17 career NHL games.
For Pinto, the 2022-23 campaign was his ‘I have arrived’ moment. The organization was always excited to have the University of North Dakota alum join the team. Pinto has always proven to be an effective two-way asset, very impressive for a young player. Additionally, he scored 20 goals this year, in what was qualified as his official rookie season. This was after an early season injury to fellow centre, Joshua Norris, thrust the reliable Pinto into a second-line role. Furthermore, he registered 35 points and an effective 4.7 CF% Rel.
What Does This Mean in the Organization
He played the majority of the season flanked by Alex DeBrincat and Drake Batherson. Furthermore, if it were not for poor shooting percentages for the trio, they might have had a much more productive season. Still, they were a capable NHL second line. Look for Pinto to shift into the more envisioned third-line role for 2023-24 behind the two studs Norris and Tim Stützle. Finally, this is just another piece of the organization puzzle and fitting all the parts with synchronization. Along with new owner Michael Andlauer, and all the subsequent front office moves, the signing of Pinto helps the players and fans feel confident. Look for the Sens to reevaluate in the offseason to be able to make a push for the 2025 playoffs and Pinto to be an important contributor.
