A travelled defenceman Brian Dumoulin signs a contract with the Seattle Kraken. Oh you know, just Ronnie Franchise (Ron Francis) General Manager doing his magic. Bringing Dumoulin is something of a ‘we are a playoff team’ so we need playoff winners. You may recall, Dumoulin is a two-time Cup Winner as a member of the 2016 and 2017 Pittsburgh Penguins. The deal itself is worth $6.3M over the two seasons.
Brian Dumoulin Signs a Two-year Contract with the Seattle Kraken
Dumoulin is a ten-year NHL veteran, having laced them up exclusively for the Pens. He is coming off an impressive 25-point season, which was likely a catalyst for this attractive offer. That total of 25 was a career-high as well. Furthermore, he has never been below 20:33 in TOI in the seven seasons since his rookie campaign. The 6’4” Dumoulin signing with the Seattle Kraken is just an overall calculated chess move by Francis. Dumoulin went to Boston College, where he seasoned his game before making it to the NHL originally. Now he gets to apply his craft on the other coast.
What Does This Mean for the Seattle Kraken
It seems that the Seattle Kraken have a plan more aligned with that of the Vegas Golden Knights. That is where executives had a well-known quote to win in their sixth year of existence. One aspect of the Kraken top-six defencemen is their depth. Adding Dumoulin is seamless and only positive. Vince Dunn may see fewer higher-pressure situations and allowing him to dominate more than in 2022-23. Moreover, this is the type of move to attempt to get the team over the hump. The Kraken forced the Dallas Stars to game seven of the second round of the Western Conference 2023 playoff series. Dumoulin will help them as they look to go further.
