Free Agent Tristan Jarry Signs New Contract

It has been confirmed that goaltender Tristan Jarry signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Jarry signed a five year deal with a cap hit of $5.375 million per season.

Jarry Returning to Pittsburgh

One of the top players in this year’s free agency, Jarry is a highly capable and hard-working goaltender.

The Pittsburgh Penguins’ undisputed starter for several years, Jarry’s strong stats speak for themselves. He is a confident player and individual, which in turn allows the skaters in front of him to play with ease and assurance.

Whilst he is a gifted player, he is however prone to streakiness. His teammates will be looking for him to maintain a level of consistency that has been previously lacking. Should he unlock this trait, the 28-year-old’s reputation could skyrocket.

Jarry’s Career So Far

Drafted 44th overall in 2013 by the Penguins, Jarry started his professional career in the AHL with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Initially, he had to settle for being Pittsburgh’s go-to emergency cover, making just a few cameos in the NHL. However, Jarry honed his craft well with the Baby Pens, cementing his place as one of the best starters in the AHL.

At the start of the shortened 2019-20 season, Jarry finally got his NHL breakthrough. Sharing the crease with Matt Murray, the Canadian played 33 games, winning 20.

During the season, Jarry managed three shutouts, a save percentage (SP%) of .921 and a goals against average (GAA) of 2.43 feats which earned him his first All-Star Game appearance.

Having established himself as an NHL-calibre goalie, Jarry signed a new three-year extension and was named as the starter for the Penguins for the start of the 2020-21 season.

Despite difficulties in the post-season and a spotty injury record, Jarry was never usurped from his position as starter. In the last three seasons, he played 39, 58 and 47 games respectively. He bookended each with a SP% of 9.09, with a .919 percentage in 2021-22. His GAA was always relatively respectable too; 2.75, 2.42 and 2.90. He also got a second All-Star Game nod in 2022.
