The Ottawa Senators have some injuries along with some exciting news to update as of Wednesday daytime. Of these injury updates, it appears that star defenceman Thomas Chabot will likely miss a couple of weeks. This is yet another blow to the Ottawa Senators very slim playoff probabilities. Also, there is some talk about other players, such as Ridly Greig, Claude Giroux, and Cam Talbot. The exciting news is defenceman prospect, Tyler Kleven will draw into the lineup.
Sens’ Thomas Chabot Injured Likely Done for Duration of Season
Despite the injury for Thomas Chabot, overall it has been a productive season. In 68 games played this year, he has accumulated the second-highest point total of his career at 41. Additionally, even though his ice time is down from his usual 26 minutes a night, at 24:58 it is still quite impressive. Furthermore, he was on pace for the second-best Defensive Point Share (DPS) rating of his career at 3.4. On the other hand, he has been banged up a bit this year. Most notably, was missing about a week in November after a hit from Philadelphia Flyer Travis Konecny.
Other Injury Updates for the Senators
From an injury front overall, there is mixed news. Young centre, Ridly Greig’s sternum injury is not as bad as first suspected. He could come back sooner rather than later. Also, goaltender Cam Talbot has been practicing with the club, so is a game-time decision Thursday between the pipes. Finally, Claude Giroux was not feeling well and was held out of practice today. Although look for Giroux to draw in on Thursday.
What Thomas Chabot Getting Injured Means for the Senators
At the end of the day, it still does not look like the Senators will sneak into the playoffs. If other teams play at their current win percentages, they could mathematically make it. This would very well mean within a game of winning out their remaining schedule. Also, with all the injuries, this would be all the more labourious the task. Recently, Jakob Chychrun was shut down for the regular season, as was the update on goaltender Anton Forsberg.
Some Hopeful News for the Future of the Club
There is some good news about the product on the ice. Senators fans will get a look at some players fighting for jobs in 2023-24. Most exciting for Sens fans, Tyler Kleven gets into the lineup with another defenceman out. Kleven was only signed to his entry-level contract less than a week ago. The bulking 6’4” D-man, looks to carry the grit of his last two seasons at the University of North Dakota. He combined 177 PIMs over the two seasons, in just 73 games. Another player to watch closely is Dylan Gambrell. He is a pending RFA. Finally, the goaltenders are in a battle for seedings within the organization. Between the recent add, Dylan Ferguson, Mads Sogaard, or Leevi Merilainen, any could have a chance at backup next year.
