Vegas Goalie Out Week-to-Week
Thompson has been a bright spot for the Golden Knights this season, stepping in as the starting goaltender after the announcement that Robin Lehner would be out for the entirety of the 2022-23 season. He holds a 20-13-3 record with a 2.66 GAA and a .914 save percentage. This is Thompson’s first true year in the NHL, playing just 19 games in the 2021-22 season, with a career GAA of 2.68 and a .914 save percentage. Thompson was undrafted, earning a spot with the Golden Knights after playing in the Canadian college system and the WHL. Thompson won the Baz Bastien Memorial Award in 2021 for his first season with the Vegas AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights, with a .943 save percentage.
Looking Ahead
Thompson’s injury creates a dilemma for a Golden Knights team that has struggled with injuries all season. Backup Adin Hill has been good for the Golden Knights when called upon, with an 11-5-1 record, and a GAA of 2.58. His save percentage is .911. Laurent Brossoit has been in Henderson for much of this season, playing 23 games and holding a .909 save percentage. While both Hill and Brossoit are decent goalies, Thompson’s athletic style and ability in the shootout have been vital for the success of the Golden Knights up to this point. Jack Eichel noted in postgame availability Thursday that Thompson has been “the backbone of our group all year“, so Thompson is a big loss for a team trying to cling to first place in the Pacific division.
With the return of Zach Whitecloud to the lineup on February 7, the Golden Knights are playing with the majority of their starting skaters for the first time since Thanksgiving. They’ll need to rely on them even more without the backstop of Logan Thompson in the blue paint.
