Max Pacioretty, Dylan Coghlan Traded to the Carolina Hurricanes

Forward Max Pacioretty has been traded to the Carolina Hurricanes alongside teammate defenceman Dylan Coghlan. The trade took many by surprise, as Pacioretty was one of the main players for the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas receives future considerations in return for both players.

Max Pacioretty Traded to Carolina in Cap Dump Move

Even though the rumours surrounding the Golden Knights have been happening for a while, Pacioretty getting traded does come as a surprise. It was first reported earlier on Wednesday, right when free agency started. And now, it’s come to reality. Pacioretty is going to Carolina. This move is important for Vegas due to cap space. They were over the cap by roughly $2.6 million and needed flexibility to be able to bring someone if needed. Pacioretty becomes an unrestricted free agent by the end of next season but they needed the space right now. This move frees up $7 million for them to be more comfortable. The bad thing is that they’re moving a player who’s been nothing but amazing for them. It’s an awful situation to be in – even though they caused it upon themselves.

They won’t be in too much trouble, though, as they traded for Shea Weber earlier in the offseason. Weber is most likely done with his career but his $7,85M cap hit on long-term injured reserve will provide some relief. For Dylan Coghlan, he was a restricted free agent who hasn’t signed yet, so it’s up to Carolina to deal with that now. But it sure hurts to lose a young player on a team that is only getting older. Vegas will have to be very careful with their next moves.

Carolina Signs Ondrej Kase

To add to their already packed team, the Hurricanes have reportedly signed Ondrej Kase through free agency. After not receiving a qualifying offer from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kase has found his new home in Raleigh. It was tough for the fans to see him become a UFA. However, the Leafs didn’t really have the cap space and were likely worried about Kase’s arbitration rights. The deal with Carolina is reported to be one year, $1.5M AAV, which is not big in any circumstances. But Toronto chose to let him go. Kase had 14 goals and 13 assists in 50 games with the Leafs last season.
