The Vancouver Canucks Hire Two Former Head Coaches

Vancouver Canucks Coaches

The Vancouver Canucks have added a pair of new coaches to their staff. They’ve hired Mike Yeo and Trent Cull as assistant coaches. They also hired Jeremy Colliton as the head coach of their AHL team, the Abbotsford Canucks. Vancouver parted ways with NHL assistant coach Brad Shaw.

Vancouver Canucks Hire New Coaches

The Canucks hire Mike Yeo and Trent Cull on the Canucks’ bench with Bruce Boudreau. Yeo has coached professionally since 2000 and served as a head coach three times. He was the head coach for the Minnesota Wild for four and a half seasons, the head coach for the St. Louis Blues for parts of three seasons, and was the Philadelphia Flyers interim head coach this past season when Alain Vigneault was fired.

Trent Cull has spent the last five seasons as the head coach of the Vancouver Canucks’ AHL team. Those teams never finished below a .500 record with him. Last season they finished fifth in the Pacific division and lost in the qualifying round of the playoffs.

With Cull promoted, the Canucks hire Jeremy Colliton as their AHL head coach. Colliton spent parts of four seasons as the head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks before being fired on November 6 of last season. He also spent a year-and-a-half as the coach of the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL before being promoted to the Blackhawks. Colliton took the IceHogs to the third round of the Calder Cup playoffs in 2018. He was also an assistant coach for Canada’s men’s Olympic team.

The Canucks also part ways with assistant coach Brad Shaw. Last season was Shaw’s only year in Vancouver. He has been an assistant coach in the NHL since the 2006-07 season.

What this Means for the Canucks

These moves provide new head coach Bruce Boudreau and general manager Patrik Allvin with the staff they want to move forward with. It’s a good balance with Yeo having lots of coaching experience, including winning a Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009. He can be someone Boudreau leans on. Cull’s experience in the AHL will allow him to connect with the younger players on the team and help their development. In the AHL, Jeremy Colliton has had success in his short time there. As a former NHL head coach, he knows what it takes for the players in Abbotsford to make it to the NHL.
