The Last Word on Hockey Show: Troy Terry, Ducks, and Flames
New York Islanders
Jim welcomes everyone back to another edition of the show as the boys open the show talking about the new Islanders home rink called UBS Arena. They discuss can the Islanders turn things around now that they are back on home ice and what it does for team morale. In addition, Jim breaks down the Islanders play to start the year and the struggles they have been dealing with. As Jim points out it does not help they are dealing with COVID-19 and have injuries to their top players.
Anaheim Ducks
Jim switches over to some West Coast bias this week talking about Troy Terry and the Anaheim Ducks. Terry is on a 16-game point streak to open the season. Ryan Getzlaf continues to turn back the clocks. Getzlaf recorded his 1000th point this past week. The Ducks are playing very well under Dallas Eakins, who has taken this opportunity with the Ducks and has run with it. Coach Jay brings up the play of John Gibson. Jim mentions there is a reason why Gibson does not want to leave.
Calgary Flames
The program then flips to talking about the red-hot Calgary Flames. Jim talks about how Darryl Sutter has got this team playing his style. There is a reason why Sutter is a Stanley Cup-winning head coach. The boys agree with that and Coach Jay notes the play of Jacob Markstrom. One player Jim wants to highlight is Andrew Mangiapane, who has carried over his stellar play from the World Championships over to the start for the Calgary Flames. Can’t overlook this Flames team anymore they are for real.
Carolina Hurricanes
One of the final teams the boys look at is the Carolina Hurricanes. Jim mentions Frederik Andersen‘s play and Coach Jay agrees he should be in the conversation for the Vezina Trophy. As Coach Jay mentions he and Jack Campbell are the two best goalies right now. The boys all agree the Hurricanes are taken on the identity of their head coach Rod Brind’Amour especially Tony DeAngelo.
Jim, Marc, and Jay also discuss the 2020 Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee Class in 2021, look ahead to next year’s class, plus the Team USA goalie debate and more.
Enjoy!
