Trent Frederic Signs Extension with Boston Bruins
Over his three-year NHL career, Frederic has played all 59 games with the Boston Bruins. The grinder has scored four goals, one assist, and five points in that time frame. He was originally drafted in the 1st round, 29th overall in the 2016 NHL draft by the Boston Bruins.
During the 2020-21 season, Frederic played 42 games with the Bruins, scoring four goals and one assist. He also added 15 minutes in penalties. During his NHL debut against the Winnipeg Jets, Frederic dropped the gloves against Brandon Tanev, showcasing just why he’s a huge part of the Bruins’ success on the fourth line.
What This Means for the Future
Frederic’s low production numbers kept this deal in the affordable territory. Having said that, the deal opens up the possibility for him to be selected by the Seattle Kraken in their expansion draft. He’s a solid fourth-line presence, but it’s hard to tell if there’s much to his game beyond this. The affordable signing comes at a great benefit to the Bruins, who will likely be strapped for cash against the flat salary cap. If he stays in Boston, he’ll remain a solid fourth-line presence similar to Ryan Reaves. If he leaves for Seattle, the Kraken will inherit a 23-year-old grinder with some potential to his game. It’s hard to tell what to make of Frederic, but, by all accounts, this was a smart signing on Boston’s part.
