Minnesota Wild Sign Matt Boldy to Entry-Level Deal

The Minnesota Wild have signed former lottery pick and exciting forward prospect Matt Boldy to an entry-level deal. He will report to Iowa in the AHL for now, but the talented youngster could debut before the season is over. Michael Russo of The Athletic reported the news Tuesday evening.

Wild Sign Matt Boldy

Boldy has had a very good 2020-21 between Boston College and the World Junior Championships. He posted five goals and seven points in seven games with the United States’ under-20 team. Boldy also posted 11 goals and 31 points in 22 games with BC at the NCAA level as a sophomore. It’s really been a solid campaign all-around for the 19-year-old who has a birthday in less than a week.

The Wild originally selected Boldy 12th overall in the 2019 Draft and seem to have a very good prospect on their hands. Our own scouting reports project a powerful skater who can both help drive an offence and get physical at the right times. It’s not hard to imagine a future role with Minnesota’s top-six as he matures into a true two-way skater.

What This Means For The Future

Fans may want Boldy on the NHL roster now, but Minnesota does need to balance the need for talent with a tight cap situation. They would have to suffer a major injury or make a trade to fit their newest contract into the picture. However, the cap does not affect the postseason. Boldy could make a playoff debut ala Cale Makar, who burst on the scene in 2018-19 and hasn’t looked back. The Wild forward won’t have that sort of superlative impact, but it’s very possible he will be on the roster in 2021-22. Minnesota has several forwards scheduled for free agency. His early returns with Iowa will be something to watch in the meantime.
