Rasmus Asplund Injured for the Buffalo Sabres
Asplund left the Sabres’ game Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was their 15th straight game without a win, which extended into their 16th last night against the same Penguins team.
So far this season, Asplund has scored two goals for two points in six games played. He was drafted 33rd overall by Buffalo in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Asplund has played 35 NHL games and has three goals and two assists for five career points.
He’s mainly been a member of Buffalo’s taxi squad this season.
What This Means for the Future
Buffalo has been suffering from the injury bug since the start of this season. And the injured players’ list keeps growing after each game they play – and lose.
They’re without defencemen Jake McCabe and William Borgen, goaltenders Linus Ullmark and Carter Hutton – both being their best goalies. Captain Jack Eichel is also out with an upper-body injury, hasn’t been practicing, and there’s no timetable for his return. They played Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins without forwards Kyle Okposo and Tobias Reider.
At this point, one could wonder if the team is cursed – and most people would answer yes, they are. The Sabres are currently sitting on the last spot both in the East Division and league-wide with only 16 points. They’re currently in a 15-game losing streak and recently fired coach Ralph Krueger – something that should’ve been done way before.
They have won only one game since their COVID outbreak that forced a two-week pause in their season. The fans are exhausted, the coaching staff is exhausted and losing Asplund is not going to make it any better. At this point it’s impossible to point out what is wrong with the Buffalo Sabres, let alone what should be done to improve – but getting a new goalie would probably be a good option.
