The Winnipeg Jets have bolstered their goaltending depth by claiming goaltender Eric Comrie off of waivers from the New Jersey Devils. Comrie returns to the Jets after New Jersey claimed him from that organization just last year. Elliotte Friedman reported the waiver move late Thursday morning.

Jets Claim Eric Comrie
Comrie was a depth piece for New Jersey this year. The 25-year-old appeared in just one game and stopped 30 of 33 shots in a victory over the Buffalo Sabres. That gives him a .909 save percentage and 3.00 goals-against-average. He only has nine NHL games, so one must look at the AHL stats for a more complete picture of his production.
Comrie’s last significant action came with Manitoba in 2019-20 where he appeared in 16 games with a .918 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against. Those are fine numbers, but he has been too buried on depth charts for years to make an impact at the next level.
The Jets originally drafted Comrie in the second round of the 2013 Draft. He played for the organization from 2016-17 through 2018-19. The Arizona Coyotes claimed him in October of 2019, but traded him to the Detroit Red Wings in November of that same year for Vili Saarjarvi. Winnipeg claimed him once more in December of 2019. He remained with the Jets until New Jersey stole him in January of 2021. As you can clearly see, Comrie is a popular waiver claim who must have some great travel stories.
What This Means For The Future
Don’t expect Winnipeg to do much with Comrie in 2020-21. Connor Hellebuyck and Laurent Brossoit have the goaltending situation solidified for the moment. That duo is performing like one of the league’s best and there is little reason to change the dynamic unless an injury occurs. Comrie will take a spot on the taxi squad and be one of the league’s better third goaltenders. Of course, it is inevitable that is he claimed at some point once more.
