Philippe Myers and Morgan Frost Injured for Philadelphia Flyers

Some bad news is breaking this morning for Philadelphia Flyers fans. The Flyers released news that defenceman Philippe Myers is out week-to-week with a fractured rib. Even worse, Morgan Frost is out indefinitely with a dislocated shoulder. These are two big losses for the Flyers.

Frost and Myers Out

Myers appeared to suffer the injury during Tuesday night’s tilt against the Buffalo Sabres. He was hit awkwardly into the glass area between the two benches by Jake McCabe during the first period. Myers left the game soon after and didn’t return.

Despite being pointless through Philadelphia’s first four games, Myers potentially being out for the next while here is a decimating blow to Philadelphia. Myers had a breakout season of sorts last year, his first full one in the NHL. His 2019-20 stats were impressive, posting 16 points in 50 games while being great in his own end. That defensive specialty is something the Flyers sorely needed this season after Matt Niskanen‘s unexpected retirement. Myers, while still boasting promising potential, will, unfortunately, have his development derailed for the near future.

Morgan Frost was looking to have a breakout year this season. Last year as a 20-year-old, he posted seven points in 20 games for Philly. He has a bunch of potential and was one of the names the Flyers were hoping would step up this year. Especially because Sean Couturier is also hurt. However, he will now likely miss a large chunk of the season due to it being a shortened one.

Going Forward

Philadelphia will look at internal solutions to help fill Myers’ hole. This injury might finally give Shayne Gostisbehere the boost he needs to get back into the lineup. The much-maligned defenceman still carries a hefty cap hit and he could regain some clout around the league with some increased minutes. Star d-man Ivan Provorov will definitely see more minutes as well, and Justin Braun could see increased defensive responsibilities. Mark Friedman is also sitting on the outside looking in, and he could get some increased games played as the Flyers’ seventh man. Some younger players like Travis Sanheim will also be crucial in filling Myers’ void. Some younger players like Egor Zamula could also step in, but that’s more unlikely.

For their next game, Connor Bunnamen will make his NHL debut upfront and Mark Friedman will be in for the first time this season. Stay tuned for any more details.
