New Jersey Devils Claim Aaron Dell Off Waivers

The New Jersey Devils have claimed Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Aaron Dell off of waivers.

Aaron Dell Claimed By Devils

Many people thought Dell was going to be grabbed by the Edmonton Oilers. However, the Devils have been interested in Dell for quite some time now. Many people believed if Dell was put on waivers by the Maple Leafs last week prior to the season, the Devils were going to pick him up. Sure enough, a day after the Maple Leafs put Dell on waivers, the Devils came a calling. New Jersey has been in pickle ever since Corey Crawford announced his retirement a couple of days before the season starting. This led the Devils with a goaltending duo of Mackenzie Blackwood and Scott Wedgewood. The Devils also picked up Eric Comrie. However, the Devils have been eyeing Dell for some time now.

Dell went undrafted before being signed by the San Jose Sharks AHL affiliate team the Worcester Sharks. He made the Sharks during the 2016-17 season and signed a two-year deal in February of 2018. Dell then signed a one-year with the Maple Leafs this past offseason. In 108 games with the Sharks, Dell has a 2.76 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage. Dell was clearly the best option on the board who needed waivers.

What the Future Holds

The Devils have gone from having not enough goalies to too many goalies. Since Dell was playing for Toronto, he will require a mandatory seven quarantine before joining the Devils. The same went for Comrie, who the Devils also claimed on waivers. As it stands now Wedgewood will remain the number two behind Blackwood. However, the Devils will have to make a decision on Comrie or Dell. Both of which will require waivers. Since the Devils liked Dell so much, he is most likely going to be in the third slot until Wedgewood faulters.
