Senators Sign Chlapik
The centre will be getting a one year deal to prove himself and his value in the Ottawa organization. Chlapik was a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL entry draft. He was selected 48th overall. Following his draft year, he spent two more years with the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL. He then started playing in the Ottawa organization for the Bellville Senators in the 2017-18 season. He played in 20 NHL games that year as well.
Last season, Chlapik played for both Ottawa and Bellville. In Bellville, he had 10 goals and 12 assists for 22 points in 37 games. This put him on pace to score about 49 points in 82 AHL games. In the NHL, Chlapik played in 31 games with the Senators. He scored three goals and three assists for six points. This put him on pace to score about 16 points in a full 82 game season.
2020-2021 Campaign
To start his 2020-21 season, the Senators loaned Chlpaik to HC Sparta in the Czech Extraliga. The Extraliga is the top tier pro-league in the Czech Republic. Through just three games, Chlapik has scored one goal and no assists.
What He’ll do When the NHL Season Begins
When the NHL season begins, Chlpaik will likely return to Canada. He will have an opportunity to earn a roster spot on the Senators. If he is outplayed, however, he will likely see more time in Bellville. Being a high draft pick in 2015, Chlapik will need to perform very well in Bellville to convince the Senators he was worth the pick. His one-year contract should be a chance for him to prove himself.
