Joe Thornton Signs With The Maple Leafs

Joe Thornton’s new contract comes off of a season in which the veteran centre scored 7 goals and added 24 assists for 31 points in 70 games. Though this production is less than fans have come to expect from Thornton in year’s past, he remains a productive player; particularly for a player going into this season at age 41. Thornton also remains a reliable play-driving forward, registering a 52.8 percent Corsi For, one of the stronger numbers on the San Jose Sharks last year.

Thornton will be going into his 23rd NHL season as one of the most decorated players in the league. The Canadian centre has registered 420 goals and 1,089 assists for 1,509 points in his illustrious career. Thornton has already cemented his place in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but this new contract means he has even more chances to build upon his legacy.

Going Forward

Thornton has accomplished everything there is to accomplish in the NHL. He has a Hart Trophy to his name, multiple All-Star appearances and has led the league in assists three times. Although The London, Ontario native has accomplished everything on an individual level, he still has one more hill to climb. Winning the Stanley Cup.

Thornton doesn’t have the ability to carry a team like he used to, but he won’t have to. The centre is a great fit as a veteran presence that can still chip in on the offensive end. The long-time Shark should slot in as a very solid bottom-six centre with his new contract. Look for Thornton to continue to defy his age and contribute to the success in Toronto.
