Mitch Marner Showing His Worth
When the Toronto Maple Leafs signed then contract hold out forward Mitch Marner to a six-year $10.893 million AAV contract, everyone expected him to produce. And, he’s done just that. Over 59 games he has established himself as an NHL scoring leader. He missed four weeks of the season due to an ankle injury and yet his points-per-game ratio didn’t change noticeably. During the 2018-19 season he averaged 1.15 points-per-game and this season thus far he is at 1.14.
Throwing in the fact that he plays on the second line along with Kasperi Kapanen and John Tavares doesn’t hurt his chances of being an offensive threat.
While many criticize Marner’s holdout, he is definitely showing his worth with the kind of performance one would expect earning the money he earns. The Leafs are loaded with offensive ability and if they can get better defensively, they will be hard to stop.

Morgan Rielly’s Injury
Along with Marner missing time, Morgan Rielly also missed eight weeks due to a fractured foot. He did get back into action for the game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on March 10th only to be back on the shelf due to the pandemic suspension of play. While Rielly fell off considerably from his 2018-19 statistics where he collected 25 goals and 52 assists good for 72 points, his value on the blueline persists. This shortened season, he has only tallied three goals and 24 assists in 47 games.
Playing on the top defensive unit with Cody Ceci, Rielly is certainly the better D-man in that tandem. Ceci has only managed eight points in 56 games and is a below average possession player.

Auston Matthews Does it All
There won’t be much disagreement that without Auston Matthews the Maple Leafs would be a completely different team. He personifies an NHL superstar. Auston was tied with Alex Ovechkin with 35 even-strength goals and has 12 power-play tallies to show his worth. He was just one shy of equalling Ovechkin and David Pastrnak for the lead in goals scored with 47 when play was halted.
It will be a travesty if he is not able to obtain that 50-goal mark due to circumstances beyond his control. He’s shooting at an amazing 16.2 percent accuracy. He has been on the ice almost an average of two and a half minutes more per game than last season.
And why not? He’s right up there with the most talented players in the NHL, and it seems like he’s getting better every game… if that’s possible.
While Marner is a star in his own right, Matthews shows him a thing or two about fashion. Mitch is looking so forlorn and wondering why he can’t look that good.
