Taylor Hall Experiment

The Arizona Coyotes season hasn’t really developed as expected even after acquiring star forward Taylor Hall in December of 2019. The team gave up their first-round draft pick and three prospects to get Hall to the desert. Now, it may have all been for naught as he will become a free agent whenever the current season ends.

He will obviously be looking for big money, with rumours of an ask in the $9-10 million AAV on a long-term contract. But (and in this case it is an enormous BUT) the Coyotes are short on cap space and will need to make some roster moves to get to the range of money that Hall is seeking.

So, with that in mind, here is the Taylor Hall NHL comic caption we created. Enjoy.

“Gee if I get $10 million, I can purchase that house in the south of France, and get that fancy sports car I’ve been looking to buy. I really love it here in the desert, but a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.”

Phil Kessel Disappointment

Acquiring Phil Kessel was intended to put some premium fuel into a sputtering Coyotes’ offence which really needed some more scoring. If one studies Kessel’s resume it was easy to see that he has had the talent needed to put the puck in the net.

Except… he hasn’t quite done that this season for the Desert Dogs. His 14 goals and 24 assists in 70 games isn’t quite what his buddy Rick Tocchet thought he’d get out of Mr. Kessel. Maybe he needs to train better (or more often) and perhaps his age (33 in October) explains why his offensive game left town.

So, if Kessel doesn’t start scoring will he be on the trading block? Doubt it… unless it is done to give Taylor Hall the money needed to sign him.

Without any further delay, here is our NHL comic caption for Kessel.

“Hey, I’m wide open over here! Oh yeah, I guess if I can only score 0.20 goals a game I’m not going to be the first option any more.”

Oliver Ekman Larsson’s Decline in Play

When an NHL team invests $66 million over an eight-year contract they expect to gain some residuals in return. Oliver Ekman-Larsson had an okay year in 2018-19 when he registered 14 goals and 30 assists in 81 games. So, they rewarded him with the huge long-term contract and then the next season he has tallied only nine goals and 21 assists in 66 games.

It seemed like he was getting beat as players got by him and his defensive woes were mounting. Alex Goligoski actually played better than OEL when he scored four goals and 28 assists in 70 games. Goligoski was able to block 69 more shots than OEL but had 38 less hits. At times, Tocchet took OEL off the first line defensive unit and replaced him with Goligoski and Jakob Chychrun.

Others are wondering if he possesses the leadership qualities to be captain of the team. Tocchet seems to want more from him, but OEL is a more quiet type of guy. Let’s see how this one plays out.

Here is our Oliver Ekman-Larsson NHL comic caption.

“Oh no! I missed my coverage again?! I got that big contract and now they are going to be after me to play better. Maybe I wasn’t the best choice to be captain.”
