Washington Capitals Place Brendan Leipsic on Unconditional Waivers

Brendan Leipsic

The Washington Capitals announced that they have placed forward Brendan Leipsic on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. The news comes days after photos were leaked online of Leipsic and his friends degrading women on Instagram. Leipsic was set to become a restricted free agent come this summer. The team announced the news Friday morning.

Washington Capitals Terminate Brendan Leipsic

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native spent this past season playing for the Washington Capitals. In 61 games played, he scored three goals and added eight assists for 11 points to go along with 13 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 52.9 percent Corsi For and a relative Corsi of 0.6.

Throughout his four-year NHL career, Leipsic has played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, Los Angeles Kings and the Washington Capitals. In 187 career games played, he scored 16 goals and added 43 assists for 59 career points. He was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators in the third round, 89th overall in the 2012 NHL draft.

What This Means for the Future

Although Leipsic is a serviceable NHL player, no team wants to deal with the drama that was caused by this whole situation.  It is hard to say if Leipsic will ever get another shot in the NHL. With the uncertainty of the NHL season moving forward, the Capitals hope they can put this whole situation behind them and move on.

Led by stars like Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals were in the midst of a playoff race. Sitting atop of the Metropolitan Division with 90 points, the Capitals were only one point ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers. Although they lost last year in seven games, the Capitals are a different team this year. With the emergence of goalie Ilya Samsonov, the Capitals have two starting calibre goalies at their disposal. It would have been a lot of fun to see how they did this time around.
