Greatest Hockey Players
Bobby Orr
Orr is known for pioneering the term “offensive defenseman”. Some of the feats he is celebrated for are:
– First player in a season to have 100+ assists
– Winning the Art Ross Trophy
– The only player to win the Art Ross Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy, Hart Trophy, Norris Trophy all in one season.
Orr is also the first defenseman to score 40+ and 30+ in a single season.
Gordie Howe
The four-time champion of the Stanley Cup also won six Hart Trophies. The reason he’s on this list is that he’s the only hockey player in the history of the NHL to compete in five different decades. Also known as Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe also skated together with his sons Mark and Marty.
Gordie has appeared in 1,767 NHL games, a feat no one else has been able to achieve. Mr. Hockey indeed.
Mario Lemieux
Despite his size, Mario Lemieux was speedy. Unfortunately, due to illness and injury, “Super” Mario was not able to have a longer career but was a great player indeed. He was only able to play a little over half of the games his team, the Penguins played.
Over his 21 year career and 17 partial seasons, Lemieux was able to score 1,723 points and 690 goals.
Wayne Gretzky
In the history of the game, there hasn’t been a player who has scored more goals and assists put together than Gretzky. He managed to collect 1,963 assists over the span of his 21-year career. His goals alone a total of 894. Other than Mario Lemieux, Gretzky is the only other player to collect 160 points in one season. He managed to pass this mark eight times and the highest he’s gotten in a single season is 215.
Maurice Richard
Richard was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1961. During his career, he managed to record 544 markers and 965 points. Also known as “Rocket”, he managed to win eight championships within the span of his 18-year career. He was also the first player in the history of the game to get to 50 markers.
This list has not necessarily taken into account orders such as eras the players were in the game, and the kind of competition they faced. However, the players listed can be counted among the true greats of the game.
