Ottawa Senators Ink Jonathan Aspirot
Aspirot spent last season playing for the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League. In 44 games played, he scored two goals and added 14 assists for 16 points to go along with 39 minutes in penalties.
Originally undrafted, Aspirot spent his major junior career playing for the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL. In three seasons with the Wildcats, Aspirot scored 22 goals and added 51 assists for 73 career point in 188 games played.
Aspirot has all the tools needed to succeed at the next level. He is a calm reliable defender who always makes the smart play. He is also not afraid to be physical when needed. Whether that be clearing the front of his net from any danger lurking or going into the corner to retrieve a puck, Aspirot will use his strength to gain the upper hand on his opponents.
What this Means for the Future
Before the NHL season was put on hold, the Senators were not in a very good spot. Near the bottom of the league, they could never get anything concrete going and for many fans, the times were rough. Although things may be bleak now, the Senators have one of the best prospects pools in the NHL so their future looks very bright.
Adding a defenceman like Aspirot can never hurt. Although they have top end prospects like Erik Brannstrom waiting for NHL time, no team will ever complain about having depth options. Although he may be a few years away from the NHL, Senators fans are happy that they have guys that could help down the road. With proper time and development, Aspirot will look to be a quality option for the Senators for years to come.
