The Montreal Canadiens have re-signed forward Alex Belzile to a one-year, two-way contract worth $700,000 in the NHL and $225,000 in the AHL, with a guaranteed salary of $250,000. This deal carries him through the 2020-21 season.

Alex Belzile Re-Ups With Habs

At the beginning of his career, Belzile spent five years in the ECHL where he put up 62 goals and 107 points in 169 games. During that time he played for the Gwinnett Gladiators, Alaska Aces, Idaho Steelheads, Fort Wayne Komets, and Colorado Eagles. He won two Kelly Cups which came in 2014 and 2017.

This season Belzile has put up seven goals and seven assists for 14 points in 20 games. He has also accumulated 30 minutes in penalties during that period. Belzile has been out of action since December after undergoing surgery on his right pectoral muscle.

Belzile has spent the past two seasons with Rocket de Laval putting up 26 goals and 42 assists for 68 points in 94 career games. He has 54 goals and 78 assists for 132 points over the course of 239 AHL games. Belzile was named to the AHL All-Star game during the 2018-2019 season.

What This Means for the Habs

Belzile is currently serving as one of the alternate captains for Rocket de Laval after signing a one-year deal with the team back in May. The 28-year-old Quebec native has yet to get a crack at the NHL level during the course of his career. He will look to continue to be a role model for the younger players down in Laval for the next two seasons.

In a statement regarding the signing Montreal Canadiens GM said “Since joining our organization, Alex has continued to impress us with his determination and work ethic. He’s a role model for the younger players we have developing in Laval. His on-ice skillset combined with his leadership qualities will help him battle for a roster spot at training camp next season”.
