Pittsburgh Penguins Dominik Simon Out Week-to-Week

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced that centre Dominik Simon is sidelined week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

Dominik Simon Injured

The injury occurred on Saturday when the Pittsburgh Penguins were facing the San Jose Sharks. Dominik Simon was battling with Sharks defencemen Radim Simek when Simek caught him up high with an elbow. Simon left the game and did not return.

So far this season, Simon has seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points to go along with 12 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 53.2 percent Corsi For and a relative Corsi of 3.0.

Over his five-year NHL career, Simon has played solely for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 173 career games, Simon has 19 goals and 45 assists for 64 career points to go along with 46 minutes in penalties. Simon went originally undrafted but he had a stellar 2014-15 campaign with HC Plzen in the Czech Extraliga where he put up 30 points in 52 games. His play caught the attention of the Penguins. They signed him to a three-year entry-level contract on July 15, 2015.

What This Means for the Future

With Simon out for an extended period of time, the Penguins will miss his defensive play. Simon is superb at getting the puck out of his zone and has played a great grinding style down low. While Simon doesn’t ooze offensive talent, he can still put the puck in the back of the net when needed and provides physicality which every team loves to have.

With Simon out, Sam Lafferty figures to draw back into the lineup. In 47 games with the Penguins this season, Lafferty has six goals and seven assists for 13 points.

The Penguins currently hold the third-place spot in the Metropolitan Division. Having lost their last six games, they need to find their groove again if they hope to stay afloat. The Penguin’s next game sees them host the Ottawa Senators tonight.
