Ottawa Senators Deal Tyler Ennis to the Edmonton Oilers
The Ottawa Senators completed a trade on Monday, February 24th with the Edmonton Oilers. The Senators acquired a fifth-round pick in 2021 in exchange for forward Tyler Ennis.
Ennis Joins the Oilers
In Ennis, the Edmonton Oilers get a talented depth forward who can provide offence on a cheap contract. This season, he scored 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points in 61 games, adding 16 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 50 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 2.7.
Those totals are up compared to last season, where he scored 12 goals, six assists for 18 points. Over his 10-year NHL career, Ennis has played for the Buffalo Sabres, Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators. In that time, he has 131 goals and 178 assists for 309 career points in 604 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round, 26th overall of the 2008 NHL draft by the Sabres.
What This Means for the Future
Ennis’ new team gets a solid forward that’s had a resurgence this season. He’s got the most points this season since the 2014-15 season when he was with the Sabres. The Edmonton, Alberta native can slot in as a nice depth forward for his new team. His hometown team also gets a forward that comes at a low cost and provides some much-needed depth and the Oilers push for the playoffs.
The trade is another move by the Senators in their continuing rebuild. Ottawa has been flipping a lot of their assets to get more draft picks and prospects. The Senators do have a promising young core of players and it looks like they’re going to keep that youth movement going with this deal.
