In Dillon, the Capitals get a reliable veteran defensive defenceman who. This season, he scored one goal and 13 assists for 14 points, adding 83 minutes in penalties. His impact is shown through his defensive stats. He has 51.7 percent Corsi For and a relative Corsi of 3.1. Both of those stats were among the top of San Jose’s roster.
Dillon has played for two teams in his career, including San Jose. Over the course of that career, he’s played in 588 games and netted 114 career points. This includes 22 points set in each of the last two years; his career-high. Dillon was originally undrafted and signed by the Dallas Stars in March of 2011. He was dealt to San Jose three years later.
What This Means for the Future
This Brenden Dillon trade signals that this is a lost season for San Jose. The team never seemed right since the start of this season. They have allowed the third most goals in the league and are 26th in goals for and have received terrible goaltending. San Jose doesn’t have their first round pick because of the Erik Karlsson trade and only have two picks in the first four rounds. They needed to trade assets to start adding youth to an aging core.
The team acquiring Dillon are getting a strong defensive defenceman. He won’t score a lot, but he will be able to be a solid number four or five blueliner who can shut down the opposition. Dillon is six-foot-four and 225 pounds, so he is an ideal size to play physical playoff hockey. He will be able to overpower smaller forwards and hold his own against larger players.
