The Ottawa Senators announced Monday afternoon that they have claimed forward Jayce Hawryluk off of waivers from the Florida Panthers. He will wear the number 79. Just the second player ever to do so in Ottawa’s history.

Jayce Hawryluk Claimed
This claim comes just a week before the NHL Trade Deadline where the Senators are expected to be sellers. However, adding an extra body never hurts. Hawryluk will likely get to play if Ottawa starts to sit any players out in fear of injury. Hawryluk is a solid bottom-six player who brings it every night that he plays.
This season, he has one goal and two assists for three points in 15 games with the Panthers. Last year he had 12 points in 42 games. Offence isn’t his specialty, however, he is very reliable in his own end which is always a helpful thing in the NHL. Especially on a young team like Ottawa. Jayce Hawryluk was drafted back in 2014, 32nd overall in round two of the NHL Entry Draft. He has only played with the Florida organization.
Going Forward
Moving forward, Ottawa will likely need Hawryluk as the deadline approaches. He can play if they need to sit anyone. However, he will also be a useful body post-deadline. This way, Ottawa doesn’t need to rush any of their prospects up from Belleville if they don’t feel the need to. They can continue to take big roles in the AHL instead of bottom-six roles in the NHL. It will be a busy time for the Senators here going forward. They have plenty of names that teams will likely be looking at.
