Columbus Blue Jackets Seth Jones Out Indefinitely with Ankle Injury

Seth Jones

The Columbus Blue Jackets are faced with yet another injury as defenceman Seth Jones is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. It was later announced that this injury will require surgery.

Seth Jones On Injured Reserve

Jones suffered the injury in the Jackets 2-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. He scored the lone goal for the Jackets and had 23:35 minutes of ice time.

So far this season, Jones has played in 56 games putting up six goals and 24 assists over that time. His possession numbers were 48.5 percent Corsi and a Relative Corsi of +0.4.

Jones spent two and a half seasons with the Nashville Predators before being acquired by the Blue Jackets via trade. He has a total of 60 goals and 198 assists for 258 career points in 524 career games. He was originally drafted fourth overall by the Predators in the 2013 NHL Draft.

What This Means for the Future

Seth Jones now joins fellow defencemen Ryan Murray and Dean Kukan on the Blue Jackets injured reserve list. The 25-year-old defenceman is easily the Jackets best blue-liner and has been a big part of their successful season thus far with the Blue Jackets. However, Columbus is currently ranking 27th in the league in shots against this season with 29.8. Andrew Peeke will likely fill Jones’ spot on the top pairing in his absence. Peeke has one assist in eight games this season.

Cam Atkinson

And now Cam Atkinson will not play tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

With Jones out of the line-up, the Jackets have called up Gabriel Carlsson from the AHL. Carlsson has a goal and 10 assists for 11 points in 39 games this year for the Cleveland Monsters. He’s been held off the scoresheet in the six games he’s played with the Blue Jackets this season and has committed one minor penalty. The Swedish defenceman brings size to Jackets line-up standing at 6’5″. Carlsson was originally drafted 24th by the Jackets in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
