Barrett Hayton Injured

According to the report, Hayton has a Grade 1 AC Separation in his left shoulder. Recall, the injury to Hayton happened in the semifinals against Finland of the 2020 World Junior Hockey Championships. Hayton got locked up with a Finnish player and crashed hard into the boards. He got up favouring his left shoulder and immediately left the game. There was some doubt as to whether or not he could even play in the gold medal game against Team Russia. Hayton worked with the medical staff to make sure he was ready to go for the game. Not only did Hayton play in the gold medal game, eventually went on to score the tying goal for Canada. His heroics will go down in Canadian hockey lore as he led Canada to a 4-3 win over Russia to win the gold medal.

During the tournament, Hayton led all Canadian players with 12 points (six goals and six assists). He was also a member of the first team All-Star as named by the media.

Going Forward

The Coyotes announced on Wednesday, January 8th, the recalling of Hayton back from his loan from Team Canada. Considering that Hayton will be out for a period of time, he has yet to be listed on the active roster. The Coyotes have yet to announce a corresponding roster move, but that is most likely coming within the days as Hayton will go on injured reserve.

The Coyotes have a good young prospect. Hayton saw time with the big club before being loaned to Team Canada. In 14 games with the Coyotes this season, Hayton had four points (one goal and three assists). Being loaned to Team Canada was the best thing for him. Now he will come back with even more confidence and ability in his game. It is unfortunate we will not get to see that for several weeks. However, Hayton, along with the Coyotes, allowed him to put winning a gold medal over making money down the road. That is a decision neither side will regret.
