The Calgary Flames have announced that they have signed defenceman Rasmus Andersson to a six-year extension worth $27.3 million. The 6’1″, 214 pound native of Malmo, Sweden who is just 23-years-old, will be a Flame player for a while.

Rasmus Andersson Signs Contract Extension
The young defenceman has tallied five goals, 26 assists for 31 points in his 135 NHL games. He was the Flames 53rd overall selection in the 215 NHL draft. He is a good possession player with a Corsi For of 52.2 and a Relative Corsi of -0.7. With his size he has been strong with 90 hits in his short NHL career. He has 60 minutes of penalties, so he won’t be pushed around. Andersson has taken 85 shots thus far this season, so he’s not afraid of getting pucks on net. He has averaged 19:14 of ice time meaning he is being relied upon to perform.
With the numbers he possesses he is more of a stay-at-home defensive player and a valuable right-hand shot. You know that the Flames think highly of his play to award him with a $4.55 million contract per year. It would seem that the team wanted to get him signed early since they have a multitude of free agents to consider paying for the 2020-21 season. The Calgary club has three restricted free agents and six unrestricted free agents to worry about.
Among the players needing new contracts next year include Cam Talbot ($2.75M), T.J. Brodie ($4.65M), and Travis Hamonic ($3.86M).
What This Means Going Forward
The Calgary Flames have locked up one of their young players for an extended period of time. That allows Andersson to feel comfortable knowing that he is on the roster and can help the team. He’s been a solid defenceman and can only get better over time.
As the Flames make a push towards the playoffs they know they’ll have Andersson doing what he does best from the blueline.
