Los Angeles Kings Kurtis MacDermid Suspended Two Games

The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Los Angeles Kings defenceman Kurtis MacDermid has been suspended for two games. This is his first career suspension.

Kings Kurtis MacDermid Suspended

MacDermid has been suspended for two games for an illegal check to the head of Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Ivan Provorov. The play occurred during the second period of Wednesday’s game between the Flyers and the Kings. Provorov was carrying the puck through the neutral zone when MacDermid stepped up to check him. MacDermid caught Provorov in the head and was assessed a match penalty.

So far this season, MacDermid has scored two goals and added two assists for four points to go along with 29 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 52.1 percent Corsi For and a relative Corsi of 0.1.

Over his three-year NHL career, MacDermid has played solely for the Los Angeles Kings. He has put up three goals and six assists for nine career points in 71 career games. He was skipped over in his draft years but ended up signing an AHL contract with the Ontario Reign after finishing his junior career with the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League. MacDermid impressed with the Reign and joined the Kings full time at the start of this season.

What This Means for the Future

With MacDermid out for the next few games, the Kings will be without one of their most physical presences on the blueline. MacDermid was the guy that always stepped up when his teammates would get in a fight or a scrum. His absence will be missed but luckily for the Kings, it is only two games.

The Kings’ next game sees them welcome the Nashville Predators to town. Coming off a 5-3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Kings will look to make it two in a row. Nashville is coming off of a disappointing loss to the Dallas Stars in the Winter Classic and is looking to start off the New Year on the right foot.
