Last year around this time, St. Louis Blues fans were speculating whether the saying, “the third time’s the charm” could really be true for Blues forward David Perron in his third tenure with the Blues. Last Word on Hockey even asked the same question. This season, it’s no question. Perron is the best player on the team and that’s a fact.
David Perron This Season
David Perron has 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in 40 games this season. He leads the team in points by six. Forwards Brayden Schenn and Jaden Schwartz are the closest to him with 34 points each.
David Perron is on pace for the best offensive season of his career by far. He’s produced an average of a point per game. If he can keep up that pace, he would have 82 points by the end of the regular season.
Plus, don’t forget Perron has been dubbed “Mr. Overtime” thanks to his four overtime goals this season, which set a franchise record. He is also on a six-game point streak with 10 points in those six games. He has been a huge factor in the Blues current eight-game winning streak. It’s safe to say the Blues would not be at the top of the Western Conference and in second place in the NHL without Perron.
Last Season
It’s worth it to point out the obvious best part of David Perron’s return to St. Louis— he is a Stanley Cup Champion with the Blues. He isn’t a Stanley Cup Champion with the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks or Vegas Golden Knights. Just the Blues. That alone made it the third time the charm for Perron. His play since he came back to the Blues helps too.
Last season, David Perron had 23 goals and 23 assists for 46 points in 57 regular season games. Add another seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 26 playoff games. Gone are the days before his time with the Golden Knights when Perron disappeared in the playoffs. Here are the days when Perron and Ryan O’Reilly are dynamite together.
David Perron’s Career
In 819 career regular season games, David Perron has 214 goals and 316 assists for 530 points, which is an average of .65 points a game. In 83 career playoff games, Perron has 11 goals and 28 assists for 39 points.
When he played in St. Louis the first time from 2007-13, he had 84 goals and 114 assists for 198 points in 340 games, which is an average of .58 points a game, just a little under his career average in points a game.
St. Louis then traded him to Edmonton, where he played parts of two seasons. He had 33 goals and 43 assists for 76 points in 116 games as an Oiler, which is an average of .66 points a game, just a hair above his career average.
Then he was traded to Pittsburgh, where he played parts of two seasons. He had 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points in 86 games, which is average of .44 points a game, which is far less than his career average per game.
Then he was traded to Anaheim, where he played less than half a season. He had eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 28 games as a Duck, which is an average of .71 points a game. It’s not a fair average to compare to his other averages because he only played in 28 games, but it’s an average all the same.
His second adventure with the Blues only lasted one season. He had 18 goals and 28 assists for 46 points in 82 games, which is an average of .56 points per game, which is below his career average. He signed as a free agent on July 1, 2016.
Vegas then picked him up in the expansion draft and he only played there for one season. However, it was the best offensive season of his career. He had 16 goals and 50 assists for 66 points in 70 games, an average of .94 points per game, which is the closest to what he has so far this season, but still not as good.
Perron’s third (and hopefully last) stint with the Blues took place when he signed again as a free agent on July 1, 2018.
