New Jersey Devils Place Nico Hischier On Injured Reserve

The New Jersey Devils announced the team has placed forward Nico Hischier on injured reserve with an illness.

Nico Hischier On Injured Reserve

Hischier is dealing with an illness that has forced him to miss the last three games. His absence began before the Chicago Blackhawks game on Friday night. He was a late scratch as he did not take the pre-game warmups. This left the Devils shorthanded up the middle as well as offensively in general. Hischier travelled with the team on Saturday but did not play in the game against the Nashville Predators. After a day off, Hischier did not participate in practice on Monday. However, head coach Alain Nasreddine thought there was a chance he could play against the Stars on Tuesday.

Hischier missed two games earlier in the season with an upper-body injury that the team considered day-to-day. He is off to a slow start like the rest of the team, recording 16 points (five goals and 11 assists) in 25 games this season.

Going Forward

With Hischier going on IR, the Devils recalled Michael McLeod from Binghamton of the AHL. In 24 games with Binghamton this season, McLeod has 13 points (four goals and nine assists) tied for the team lead with Nathan Bastian.

McLeod is coming into his own this season. He made a strong case to make the team during training camp was one of the last players to be cut, and he’s taken tremendous strides in his growth. There is a possibility he gets into the lineup Tuesday night against the Stars. The Devils continue to struggle offensively regardless if Hischier is in the lineup or not. New Jersey is hoping if McLeod does get into the lineup, he can bring the same intensity in the NHL as he has in the AHL.
