The Penguins can add Partic Hornqvist to their long list of injuries. Hornqvist sustained a lower-body injury during practice Monday afternoon. The forward was skating on the top line with both Evgeni Malkin and Jake Guentzel. Reports are still unconfirmed but it sounds like he took a hard fall, possibly into the boards.
This is the second time the Penguins will be without Hornqvist this season. He previously spent seven games on the Injured Reserve. This latest round of damage derails Hornqvist’s path to the net even further. Currently this season, he owns six goals and five assists for 11 points over 20 games.
The Penguins drafted Hornqvist in the seventh-round with the 36th pick, 230th overall, during the 2005 NHL Draft. After 738 career games, he owns 227 goals 232 assists for a total of 459 points.
What This Means for the Future
Hornqvist joins a long list of injuries on Pittsburgh’s ravaged bench. Nick Bjugstad has a core muscle injury, like captain Sidney Crosby. Crosby is listed on the IR. Brian Dumoulin underwent ankle surgery and Justin Schultz is plagued with a lower-body injury as well.
There have been no call-ups yet, and the Penguins need bodies on the bench. Pittsburgh did sign Stefan Noesen to a one-year contract. Though it is a two-way deal, Noesen will report directly to Pittsburgh. The Pens are hurting for forward depth, and Noesen is familiar with the club.
Noesen spent 21 games with the WBS Penguins last year. During those games, he collected 14 goals and seven assists for 21 points. Noesen was drafted in the first round of the 2011 draft by the Ottawa Senators, 21st overall.
